Getting Started with Physical Therapy

Physical Therapy is a branch of Western medicine focused on the rehabilitation or prevention of musculoskeletal injury and disease by optimizing functional movement.  There are many subdivisions and variations on this methodology, giving rise to an almost endless selection of treatment strategies.  At its core, however, physical therapy relies on either skilled hands-on (manipulation) techniques and customized exercise prescription, or a combination of both of these together.  It can be used before and after surgery to ensure top surgical outcomes, or it can be paired with other auxiliary services such as personal training, pilates, yoga, or massage therapy.  

Physical therapy requires active participation from the client and may be challenging at certain points throughout the recovery process.  Progress and results ultimately require guided collaboration.  Physical therapy allows the practitioner to use his or her expertise to create a safe environment where the client's body can heal without the risk of re-injury or the stress of the unknown.

Physical therapy may use other modalities to expedite healing, such as heat, electric stimulation, orthotics, and in special cases the use of dry needling.  New York State Law will only permit a dual licensed acupuncturist and physical therapist to perform this specialized form of trigger point release using filament needles.  Alternative View is one of the few places where you can use all of these strategies together.
